Newstalk Student Enterprise Competition

A case study on Surecom written by Breda Sheehan and Prof John Fahy (University of Limerick) was selected as the case to be analyzed by the finalists in the Newstalk Student Enterprise Competition in Sligo Institute of Technology on Feb 8th and 9th. Four teams of final year honours degree students from Carlow IT, Cork IT, Dundalk IT and the National College of Ireland spent three hours analyzing the case study before presenting their recommendations to a panel of judges including Elaine Geraghty, CEO, Newstalk 106-108 fm, Michael Carey, Executive Chairman, Jacob Fruitfield and Lorraine McDonnell, Enterprise Europe Network Manager, Sligo Chamber of Commerce.

As the judges went out to deliberate, the competition manager asked Jim Sheehan to stand up out of the audience (much to the students' surprise and dismay!) and give his version of events in the company. Jim, of course turned what was to be a five minute overview into a very entertaining twenty minute account of real life in Surecom!! Among the audience was the competition sponsor Denis O Brien of Digicel and a couple of other well known organizations!! You will be glad to hear that a trip to Caribbean may be on the cards....watch this space!!! Oh, by the way, National College of Ireland won the competition in the end!
